Some people really do get better with age. Christina is one of those lucky few. She is one of the smartest and funniest young women I know (yes, Stini….young!). She has been an important part of my life for close to 23 years. Christina (and her brother, Sean) were part of the package when I married their dad a few years back. She gives me advice about raising the sixteen year old sister (still at home and pushing the limits), insight on her politics (Obama-YES; Hillary-NO) and stitches in my side from laughing so hard at her stupid opossum jokes. A family gathering without Stini is…well, pretty uneventful. On this Sunday, we will celebrate her birthday. For the 30th time! Happy Birthday, Christina!

This is a painting of Max. Oh, and his dad, Ron. Max is turning 16 today.....Happy Birthday, Max! Ron wanted to commemorate this momentous occasion with a painting of the two of them, just being themselves. So Ron sent me lots of pictures of them together and some very funny videos. I noticed right away that they always posed with their arms around each other. Sweet. So that's how I painted them; arms around each other sportin' their crowns. A couple of princes. Hey Max, your dad loves you all the way to the moon!

OK, I can see the light at the end of the birthday tunnel. Only four more to go before this birthday fairy can hang up her wings and sparkly magic birthday dust for another year. The combination of Christmas, birthdays and out-of-town guests have made it impossible to paint. But I picked up my brush today and instantly felt better, although a little rusty. Have to admit that out of the madness came a really fabulous holiday drink. Guaranteed to soften the Christmas Curmudgeon in all of us: "Apple Spider" (spiked cider). Take a mug of hot cider and add a tad of caramel sauce, vodka and rim the mug with sugar and cinnamon. You'll be humming Silent Night in no time. Or the birthday song....Happy Birthday, Micah! Make a wish!

Better than the alternative.....or Happy Birthday to me!
Another year, another wrinkle, another silvery hair...or two. More sags, more bags, less steam. Better insights, worsening night sight. Visions of the next chapter of this life. More kids, less kids---no grandkids? Kicking off another year with a full-house of gratitude. Better than the alternative....

September is the start of Birthday Season around here. We're ridin' the birthday train from now until mid-January--nineteen birthdays to be exact. All family and close friends. My son Zac is first. He turns 20 on the 23rd of September. An indisputable fact that makes me feel much older than I actually will be on my birthday--two weeks after his. Daughter, Cameron, celebrates her 16th year right after Christmas and husband, Christopher's birthday is two weeks after that in mid-January. Nineteen birthdays. So I'm going to make my birthday wish now...I wish the Birthday Fairy would drop by and shop for all those birthday gifts and wrap them up with lots of beautiful paper and ribbons. And while I'm at it, could I put in a request for the Christmas Fairy, too?
