The Great Pretender

6x8" oil on canvas, SOLD

Yesterday I got this peculiar email from a woman interested in one of my small paintings she had seen in my Daily Painters Gallery. She had specifically asked the price and shipping costs. After sending her the information she responded that she felt my price was too high because the image was not realistic enough. Not realistic enough? How about not realistic at all! She made it sound like I tried and missed. So this painting is for all the folks out there that think the only “good” art is realism. And that the rest of us are just pretending.

What was she thinking? Wow, she really missed the boat, because you are so unique! The only thing to do is laugh it off like you did. Thanks for sharing.

Ya have to wonder about some folks!
I personally don't like realism. If you want realism, take a photo.
I love your quirky stuff and all the colours; and the scribbling in the background and the little birds. Great stuff!! They are happy, uplifting paintings that make you smile :-)))

I've only recently found your site and love your use of color & the appeal of the quirky side of art you capture so well. Your experience reminds me of an incident we still laugh & shake our heads over. Years ago, at a street art fair we overheard 2 ladies talking ... as one admired my friend's paintings her lady friend said, "you don't want to buy one of those, they're home made."

Brenda, i recently discovered your site and love your work! you have a truly unique style. my experience is that the more someone knows about art, the more likely they are to appreciate the abstract stuff. it doesn't mean they'll always like it more than realism, but at least they can see the value. the prospective customer may just need a little more time to admire your wonderful work before buying.

Thanks to all of you for responding. Good to know it's not just me....I was beginning to wonder if I was really off-base! Bottom line: I'll keep painting my quirky little people!

You wouldn't want someone like her to have your work anyway! I'm not sure I get where she's coming from. She likes enough to inquire about it, but doesn't like it well enough to pay for it? Is the "realism" increased by a low price? Let it roll off your back. That poor soul is just ignorant. I love your use of color and your paintings make me smile! Now THAT's real art!!

hehehe, I'm still laughing - what a nutter (not real enough??) - well this person obviously just "doesn't get it" and is probably missing out on a whole lot of fun in life! I'm catching up on my blog reading.....& see you've put out a book, too!!! YAY!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these fun characters you create & I'm glad to catch up on 'life in the blog' (my twins are home from college, too & yeah, summer gets crazy somehow!) Cheers to you Brenda! all the best, Roxanne
