Out Of The Vault: The Long Way Home

One of my all time favorites--out of the vault. I'm crazy-busy painting for my upcoming show in February so I get to revisit the oldies but goodies.

I'll have many new paintings to post soon from my new series about love and all it's twisted little permutations (for Valentine's Day, right?) The February show is called Temptation6 and I'm thrilled to be exhibiting with five women artists that are so talented and creative...and just a bit zany. In the next few posts here I will be introducing each of them. Can't wait to share their art with you.

"Green Light"

Some paintings just come together. I don't know what it is...but I love that thing that happens when everything just flows. The colors are right, you've captured the mood, the look, the composition works and you can hang it on the wall and not have that nagging feeling that surely you can make it better. So, on average, I paint around twenty of these small paintings in a month. They're taking over my studio. And right now there are exactly two paintings that I can absolutely say there is nothing else I can do to improve upon what I have already painted. Nothing. And this is one of them. I just really love this piece!

"Space Dust"

Well, this painting has a funny concept. Remember when you were a kid and you would visit your great Aunt's dusty old house? And remember how the dust would float so gracefully through a ray of sunlight? Well, I recently read a story (about something totally unrelated) and the author referred to this as "space dust". I just love that. I used to worry that I was breathing in space dust. Now I worry about other stuff. But I do have a sense of relief that someone has actually named the floating dust particles.

"Stanley"

I once had a painting instructor by the name of Stanley Goldstein. In addition to being a great artist and teacher, he attempted to prove to me and the entire class that everything...everything is some version of blue or orange. And so, this painting reminded me of Stanley and that day in the mountains when the whole world was either blue or orange. Period.

"Girl in Blue"

Painting people takes a lot longer than still life for me. I'm always experimenting with combinations of colors to get the best skin tones. I usually rely on red/green combinations but this one is blue/orange. This piece is a nod to two of my favorite painters, Malcom Liepke and Milt Kobayashi...painters of those luscious lips.
